Masha (Mariia) Zhuravlova (she/her) is a classically trained Ukrainian cross-genre violinist based in Glasgow, coming from a broad experience of free improvisation, jazz, tango and eastern european folk music. She is currently studying the Joint Principal Study (Jazz and Classical) in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, she is an active collaborator in both worlds and beyond. She is a regular member of Garúa Tango Club as not only a violinist but also as a vocalist.

Her practice is rooted in improvisation, coming back years back when she first started improvising for dancers in Contact Improvisation festivals, and now, exploring the possibilities of the violin in every context available to her, she bounces off ideas and projects she’s working with - she’s worked with theatre, developing improvised underscore soundtrack (Honeydew no.2, and Borscht, laird and two pieces of bread), opened for Ichiko Aoba in City Halls as a part of Pat’s Soundhouse, has worked as a session musician with MONO in their European tour and recorded with local Glaswegian projects from folk to post-rock. She’s a co-founder of a Glaswegian tango band Garúa Tango Club and recently recorded new music under her own name.

She is currently developing a music score in collaboration with Rhona MacDonald and Fergus Hall for the play by Amber Francis and Odhran Thomson The ferry, the dog and the fading folk. She is also taking part in Royal Opera House’s mentorship scheme and recently joined Live Music Now Scotland in collaboration with Rhona MacDonald.
